Présentation de l'éditeur

Clergy in Cambridge in the Long Vacation of 1909. The subject itself needs no apology, for few will deny that those passages of the book of Isaiah which treat of The Servant of the Lord are among the most important of the Old Testament Scriptures. Not only is our whole conception of prophecy generally affected by the interpretation of these passages which we may adopt ;our view of the Atonement largely depends upon the sense which we assign to the words :H ewas wounded for our transgressions. It is therefore of extreme importance that we should endeavour to discover the meaning which these passages would naturally bear in the age in which they were composed; in other words, that we should study them in the light of the history of the Church of I srael. This, however, is a by no means easy task.
