Excerpt from The Heather Field and Maeve
Wagner has had his revenge; but Ibsen, though he has ceased to be execrated, has remained unpopular; perhaps he has even lost adherents, for, in replying to some admirers, he admitted that poetry interested him more than social reformations.

Le Theatre Libre, its echo in England, The Independent Theatre, I bsen, Mr George A lexander, Mr William A rcher, The New Century Theatre, the I rish Literary Theatre, and the normal intelligence of theatrical audiences in France and England. It would be impossible I mean that it would be impossible for me to speak of the plays before speaking of these contiguous matters. Therefore with your permission .. .I twas for the purpose of acting the psychological drama, which seems to interest no part of the public except actors and men of letters, that the Theatre Libre was founded. It had become known that many distinguished authors, without thought of supplying a popular demand, had written psychological plays. These remained in their desks unacted until the Theatre Libre asked permission to act them. M. A ntoine, its director, was anxious to put the taste of the public to the test, to find out whether the public was as opposed to the literary drama as managers seemed to think. The Theatre Libre was imitated in England under the name of the Independent Theatre, with this difference, that I did not hope to discover any psychological drama in England.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of two plays by the Irish playwright John Millington Synge. The first play, 'In the Shadow of the Glen', focuses on the loveless marriage of a young woman, Nora, and her elderly husband, Dan, in rural Ireland. Nora's desire for freedom and her attraction to a passing tramp lead to a tragic conclusion. The second play, 'Riders to the Sea', is a one-act tragedy that tells the story of an Irish island community and the loss of its men to the sea. Through its exploration of themes such as love, loss, and the power of the natural world, this book offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of ordinary people in rural Ireland at the turn of the 20th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
