Synopsis

Journey through the Azores and beyond, blending travel sketches with sharp observations.

The collection follows a mid-Atlantic voyage, with vivid portraits of volcanic islands, bustling ports, and the changing light over the sea. It weaves in Rome, its posters and daily life, and thoughtful reflections on language, culture, and the reach of travel writing.

Across continents, you’ll meet curious strangers, note lively scenes on dead-walls, and hear California’s fog-wrapped homecoming described with warmth and wit.

  • Vivid travel scenes from the Azores to California, with sea and sky described in clear, accessible language.
  • Humor and critique of travel culture, from cramped liners to the quirks of posters and crowds.
  • Close observations of Rome’s posters, newspapers, and daily life that illuminate a city and its era.
  • Reflective passages on climate, home, and the California dream that tie the journey together.

Ideal for readers who enjoy thoughtful travel writing with cultural insights.

Présentation de l'éditeur

No one better than the writer knows how ephemeral are these pages. No one better than he knows that they are not literature because they are bound in boards. They are merely newspaper jottings of travel during some pleasant months abroad. Their only right to be is the desire which many readers have expressed to obtain them in permanent form. To that desire the writer has yielded. A word of explanation and apology may not be amiss here. These sketches were written in the little leisure that travel affords sometimes on a steamer, often on a train. Therefore profound and matured thought may scarcely be looked for in them. They were orally dictated, hence their familiar and colloquial tone. They were written with no library at hand, and if the writers memory has failed him at times, pray let the reader pardon him.
