My debts to the historians are very numerous. To two I am especially indebted, to one for his writings, to the other for his lectures and advice. They are M. Albert Sorel and Lord Acton. I have to thank the adjudicators of the Prince Consort Prize for per mission to rewrite and expand the original essay. Thanks are also due for the criticisms and suggestions of various friends.
