This book examines the influence of the First World War on private international law, illuminating the impact of war on the sovereignty and economy of neutral nations as well as the rights of individuals. At the beginning of the war, warring nations enacted emergency legislation which extended into the realm of private rights and international law. However, the author notes that many of these laws preserved principles of prewar international law, limiting the infringement on private rights to those necessitated by the war effort, and leaving in place the tenets of individual freedom and the right to legal representation. Furthermore, the author argues that the doctrine of nationality, which became popular in Europe before the war, was a failure. According to the author, this doctrine was not strong enough to withstand the pressures of war, and in the post-war era, the doctrine of domicile should resume its place as the preferred standard.
