Synopsis

This book is a drama in two acts by Charles Dance that was first performed in 1837. It provides insight into the lives of the rural landed gentry of the time. Squire Broadlands is a stereotypical country gentleman but does have an unexpected and secret liberal and progressive bent with a strong sense of family duty. The other characters reflect the diversity of characters that would gather at country house parties of the early 19th Century - a presumptuous, moustachioed, and pretentious younger son; a female tomboy who is an excellent rider and shot, and an innocent young woman in love with one of the main characters. The play follows the relationships of these characters and explores the clash between tradition and modern thinking with a particular focus on the changing roles of women in society.
