Synopsis

Explores why Hamlet delays his revenge and how critics have interpreted the delay, with close readings of key scenes.

This scholarly essay examines Hamlet’s behavior, his interactions with other characters, and the dramatic machinery that sustains the play’s tension. Drawing on historical and modern criticism, it situates the king’s plots, Hamlet’s psychology, and the play's famous moments within a broader debate about purpose and structure. The author discusses notable critics and compares different theoretical angles, inviting readers to weigh how interpretation shapes our view of the tragedy.

  • Understand how delay, motive, and action are analyzed across acts and scenes
  • Learn how different critics read Hamlet’s inner conflict and outward speech
  • See how the play’s famous moments are read through psychological and dramatic lenses
  • Explore how scholarly debates shape our experience of the text
Ideal for readers of Shakespeare studies and anyone curious about how interpretation changes the meaning of a classic tragedy.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Hamlet, which I state in JL the second chapter of this book, was first suggested to me by a performance of the play which Mr. William Poel gave some years before the war in the Little Theatre. It left out a good deal of the play and was imperfect in execution; but it seemed to me right in conception, and suddenly I understood Hamlet, or thought I did, and saw that it was not a puzzle but a masterpiece. I then tried to explain my understanding in an analysis of the play, but did not publish it because, I thought, enough and more than enough had been written about Hamlet. I am provoked to publish it now, after rewriting it, by the theories of Mr. J. M. Robertson and Mr. T. S. Eliot, with which I deal in my first chapter and which imply, or assert, that Hamlet is not a master piece at all, but an accident or a failure. Mr.
