The author contends that much of the Bible was written as allegory, not to be taken literally. This especially applies to the Old Testament and the story of creation, which the author believes conflicts with the theory of evolution. He states that the modern Christian church has not kept pace with scientific advancement and is losing members as a result. Given the crises facing the world today, the author encourages Christians to adapt and to develop more sophisticated interpretations of their faith, particularly around the idea of the atonement, or the price paid for human sin. Only by doing so, he claims, can the Christian church regain its former authority and relevance.
