This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an essential collection of translated source material, meticulously selected to trace the emergence of Christianity from the era of the apostles to the establishment of the ecumenical council model in the early 4th century. The author selects from scriptures, letters, and writings of the period, situating these amidst the complex religious, cultural, and social contexts in which the earliest Christian communities developed. Exploring the pre-apostolic age up to the reign of Constantine, this book presents a vivid account of nascent Christianity. It identifies important themes, debates, and controversies within the church as well as the significant role of early church fathers, like Clement and Justin Martyr. Delving into the mechanics and beliefs of the religion, the book gives special attention to the ethical, doctrinal, and liturgical practices of the time, from the concept of chiliasmâ"the expected imminent reign of Christâ"to the foundational significance of the Eucharist as a central act of worship and community. The author's selections offer insights into the interplay between the Christian church and the Greco-Roman world, revealing how the church shaped its theology, organization, and devotional life in dialogue with the dominant culture. Through the careful examination of its varied writings, this book uncovers the foundational principles and diverse experiences that shaped the development of early Christianity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
