Synopsis

How Michigan built its government and economic foundation

This historical narrative explains how political ideas, finances, and leadership shaped Michigan from a territory into a state. It combines political history with lessons about growth, governance, and public policy that mattered to people at the time and still resonate today. In clear, accessible prose, the book traces key moments—from early exploration and settlement to the development of institutions, education, and internal improvements. It shows how debates over representation, banking, and public works influenced life across the territory and, later, the state. What you’ll experience:

  • A focused look at the people and ideas that built Michigan’s government
  • Context on economic policy, money, and infrastructure in a growing state
  • Profiles of leaders, institutions, and policy decisions shaping public life
  • A long view of statehood, including how politics and finance intersected with daily life
Ideal for readers of state history, political development, and those curious about how Michigan became a state and its governance took shape.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Du EiNG the quarter of a century since Judge Cooley completed this history of Michigan, students have given much attention to the early history of the Northwest. Although a large mass of details has been gathered to enrich the story, little has been discovered to change the general outlines as herein sketched. We now know that to Jean Nicolet sadventurous voyage in 1634 is due the discovery of the Straits of Mackinaw and Lake Michigan; and that Grosseilliers and Radisson dispute with Father Mesnard the title of discoverers of Lake Superior; but beyond the mention of these names there is nothing which demands the attention of the reviser.
