How Michigan built its government and economic foundation
This historical narrative explains how political ideas, finances, and leadership shaped Michigan from a territory into a state. It combines political history with lessons about growth, governance, and public policy that mattered to people at the time and still resonate today. In clear, accessible prose, the book traces key moments—from early exploration and settlement to the development of institutions, education, and internal improvements. It shows how debates over representation, banking, and public works influenced life across the territory and, later, the state. What you’ll experience:

Du EiNG the quarter of a century since Judge Cooley completed this history of Michigan, students have given much attention to the early history of the Northwest.
