Excerpt from A Lasting Peace Through the Federation of Europe
The two Essays here translated give Rousseau's views upon such subjects as the horrors of war, the means by which they may be reduced within measurable limits, the grounds on which (and on which alone) war may be justly under~ taken, the possibility of abolishing it for all time, and a Federation of europe as the only practicable, or indeed conceivable, means of doing so. All these are burning questions at the present day. And behind them all lies another question, not less burning at this moment the rights of the small States, which Rousseau, as citizen of Geneva, regarded with passionate interest, and in preserving and multiplying which, as he held, lay the best h0pe for the future of Europe.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex question of how to achieve a lasting peace in Europe. The author tackles the horrors of war, and examines the recurring cycle of conflict, exploring whether it is an inevitable consequence of nations' self-interest and their inherent state of nature. Written in the 18th century, a time when Europe was still reeling from the devastating effects of countless wars, the book offers a profound analysis of the political structures and ideologies that fueled conflict. The author delves into the historical roots of European unity and division, drawing comparisons to the ancient world and exploring the role of empires, religion, and social order in shaping international relations. Central to the book is the concept of a Federation of Europe, a unified system of governance that would unite nations under a common set of laws and institutions. Through insightful arguments, the author examines the feasibility of such a federation and the challenges it would face in overcoming the inherent self-interest and rivalries of European powers. The book remains a timeless exploration of the enduring challenges of achieving peace and the fundamental question of how to establish a just and stable world order.
