Excerpt from Life, Science and Art: Being Leaves From Ernest Hello
Near the grave of the poet Brizeux, in the cemetery of the Breton town of Lorient, is a great stone cross bearing the simple inscription: Ernest Hello. Anyone passing that way some twenty years ago might have found on the grave, not only flowers, but a little stocking, a child's shoe - the grateful and touching ex-voto of some simple peasant who felt convinced that he whose prayers, affection, and money, had ever been at the service of the poor during his life, still cared for them, and thought of them, and prayed for them, in the silent world beyond. Nothing endures like love; and the memory of the scholar and man of genius, who was also so good a friend, lingered long about Keroman and Lorient.
Ernest Hello was born at Lorient in 1828.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the fundamental concept of charity, both material and intellectual, offering a profound and challenging reflection on its significance in the context of the human soul. The author argues that while material charity is often readily given, it is intellectual charity that is truly neglected, even by those who strive to be conscientious. The book then delves deeper, investigating the nature of "great men" and their unique needs that are often overlooked by society. It posits that these men, burdened by a special poverty of the soul, often crave the recognition of their inner truth, a truth that requires not just material aid, but also intellectual understanding. The bookââ â¢s insights into the nature of charity and the interconnectedness of material and intellectual needs, as well as its exploration of the plight of those we call "great men", offer a timeless and thought-provoking meditation on the true meaning of compassion.
