Excerpt from Cromwell''s Place in History: Founded on Six Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford
IT would be as undesirable as it is impossible to repro duce in print words spoken without notes to a sym pathetic audience. Much even of my argument had passed from my mind when I was requested to publish what I had said last autumn. That I have been able to keep before myself the general line of thought on which my lectures were based is owing to two students of Lady Margaret Hall, Miss L. Verney and Miss Gunter, who kindly placed their notes at my disposal. To a certain extent, however, the lectures have been recast. Things fit to be spoken are not always fit to be printed, and things fit to be printed are not always fit to be spoken.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book scrutinizes the era of the English Revolution through the lens of Oliver Cromwell's religious beliefs and politics. The author explores the dynamic relationship between Puritanism and constitutional opposition that characterized those tumultuous times. The book traces the evolution of Puritanism in England, emphasizing its resilient spirit and its adaptive nature in the face of adversity. The author argues that Cromwell's personal journey from rural squire to Parliamentarian general was heavily influenced by his deep Puritan convictions, which motivated his resistance to the perceived tyranny of the monarchy. Drawing on historical sources, the book provides a nuanced understanding of Cromwell's role, recognizing his tactical brilliance as a military leader and his unwavering commitment to religious toleration. The author sheds light on Cromwell's complex legacy, highlighting how his influence reverberated beyond his own lifetime, profoundly shaping the religious and political landscape of England for centuries to come.
