Every reader of Matthew Arnold must have felt his curiosity aroused by the two poems entitled Stanzas in Memory of the Author of Obermann, and Obermann Once More, the former composed in 1849, and the latter some twenty years afterwards. They tell us little about the person to whom they refer, but the air of mystery with which they surround him holds our attention with a spell far stronger than the interest of personal details. They hint at more than they reveal, like the silken drapery beneath which we can trace the profile of a recumbent marble figure. They suggest a beauty that is firm, clear-cut, and noble, though infinitely sad in its marble coldness, and they make us eager to lift the veil and study every detail of the figure for ourselves.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the introspective musings of a solitary soul grappling with disillusionment and a profound sense of ennui amidst the backdrop of early 19th-century Europe. The author's letters, spanning a decade, offer a poignant portrayal of his inner struggles and philosophical reflections. Influenced by the Romantic movement and thinkers like Rousseau, the author explores themes of nature, societal expectations, and the pursuit of meaning in a world that feels increasingly empty. His experiences in Switzerland and Fontainebleau provide vivid descriptions of the natural world, while his encounters with love and loss reveal the complexities of human relationships. Through his introspective journey, the author examines the limitations of human ambition and the yearning for a more authentic existence. His evolving views on religion and the search for truth offer insights into the human condition and the quest for purpose beyond the confines of societal norms. This book serves as a timeless exploration of the complexities of the human spirit, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, there is beauty to be found in introspection and a connection to the natural world.
