The author builds a picture of apoplexy and similar conditions, where stertor occurs, as having two meanings: noise expressing interference, and interference expressing an accidental accompaniment of unconsciousness. Demonstrating the causal relationship between the two through meticulous dissections and experiments on animals, the book asserts that removal of the obstruction causing stertor entirely changes the symptoms and management of an attack, with many cases showing remarkable improvement from simply relieving this breathing impediment.
