Synopsis

A life of frontier courage and public service, told through a long arc from Mexico to California. This engaging biography reveals the character and adventures of a dedicated soldier and pioneer.

Spanning wars, migrations, and the rough edge of the American West, this book traces the career of Colonel Daniel E. Hungerford. It covers his early exploits in the Mexican War and Civil War, his steadfast soldierly bearing, and the many stirring incidents that shaped his lifetime. Readers meet a man whose grit carried him through brutal marches, hard battles, and perilous escapes, then returned him to a home filled with story and memory.

The narrative moves to California in 1849, where Hungerford becomes a versatile frontiersman: a lightering supervisor, a merchant, a drug businessman, and a community figure who helped during floods and hardship. It recounts his willingness to work cashing in on opportunities, his resilience in the face of illness and loss, and his ability to lead and adapt across many trades while sustaining a large circle of friends and allies.

  • Documented military service across three major conflicts, with honors noted by superior officers.

  • Bold frontier years in California, including business ventures, flood damage, and illness overcome by perseverance.

  • Leadership in frontier defense and relief efforts, plus a broad, practical understanding of many trades.

  • A view of how a lifetime of hardship and achievement shaped a notable figure in American military and pioneer history.

Ideal for readers of military biography and California history, offering a vivid portrait of a 19th‑century pioneer who helped shape the West.

Présentation de l'éditeur

At the Re-union of the eterans of the Mexican War, held at the Hotel Continental, Paris, September 14, 1889, to celebrate the capture of the Capital of Mexico by the army of the United States, in the year 1847, eloquent tribute was paid by one of the speakers to Colonel Daniel E. Hungerford, who bore a conspicuous part in that great historic event. As Colonel Hungerford smodesty of character would never permit him to chronicle his own brave deeds, he has been persuaded by many friends that it was due to his family, and those who have the privilege of his close friendship, to allow his heroic achievements to be recorded in this form. I crave the indulgence of the reader for my execution of this work, which is due to the truth of history, that brave deeds should be kept in lasting remembrance, and that the generations of Hungerfords to come should be inspired to emulate his noble example as a gentleman and a soldier. I. I. MURPHY. Decemhkr 5, 1889.
