Having assessed over 480 cases, the author found that the infectious disease begins with flu-like symptoms including chills, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress. The fever then sets in, accompanied by a unique odor of perspiration. Yellow Fever has no distinct stages as its symptoms often overlap and show no patterns. Various treatmentsâ"such as quinineâ"are assessed as ineffective. The book gives a snapshot of the state of medical knowledge at a time when this virulent disease presented a formidable challenge to society.
