Step inside a radical school where learning reshapes society and everyday life.
In this thoughtful work, a narrator meets an advocate of a new kind of education. The school runs on democratic principles, with students and staff sharing budgets, creating plays, building shops, and exploring science, art, and history through hands‑on projects. The setting blends classrooms with workshops, theatre, and print shops, all aimed at making citizens wiser, kinder, and more engaged with the world.
What you’ll experience
- A vivid portrait of a community where education is linked to social change, not just exams.
- Tours through theatre, crafts, and labs that show learning as collaboration and creativity.
- Conversations about why traditional schooling often separates work from learning and how this model tries to fuse them.
- Reflections on politics, class, and the role of adults in shaping a more humane society.
Ideal for readers who enjoy utopian or social‑satire fiction, and anyone curious about progressive education and its big ideas.

Preface This book is intended as an explanation of the new educational ideals and methods now being fostered and developed, under great difficulties, by courageous educators, in various schools for the most part outside the public school system. These schools are experimental in the sense that they are demonstrating upon a small scale the vast possibilities of a modern kind of education. The importance of these schools consists not so much in the advantages which they are now able to give to a few of our children, but rather in the prophetic vision they afford of all youth growing up with the same advantages. Before that can happen, the public must discover what the new education signifies, and why the old educational system is unable to keep up with the demands of modern civilization. This book attempts only a small part of such a tremendous task of enlightenment.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines why our educational models need to change to meet the demands of the 21st century. The author first examines the four key components of traditional schooling - children, textbooks, teachers and buildings - and argues that, in their present form, they are unfit for purpose. The author discusses the damage done to children's self-belief and motivation by traditional teaching methods, the irrelevance and inaccessibility of textbooks, the narrowness of teachers' expertise, and the fundamentally inappropriate nature of school buildings. The author then goes on to advocate for a complete rethink of educational priorities, with a focus on learning through play, access to real-world skills, environments that foster creativity and exploration, and an end to rote learning. This book is a radical and insightful critique of modern education that offers a fresh perspective on the future of learning. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
