The volumes of calumny that have recently rolled from the press, and the asperities they have nurtured, have induced the author to collate his fugitive communications, and submit them to public scrutiny. In expressing his opinions, he has aimed to maintain the independence which becomes the republicanism of his principles, and the decorum due to the society which has cherished and protected him; to be candid, and avoid personal aspersion :and to exhibit, without ostentation, facts which cannot be disputed, and which interest every citizen. It is possible, however, that the usual equanimity of his temper may have oc ;.9sipnally deserted him, and his intentions have been thw rte.d.
