Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, first published in 1717, consists of three letters written by William Law in response to a sermon by Bishop Benjamin Hoadly. Hoadly's sermon, which argued that the kingdom of Christ was not of this world, was seen by many to undermine the authority of the Church and the importance of the sacraments, and sparked the so-called 'Bangorian controversy'. Law's letters, which defend the traditional view of the Church and the sacraments, are a classic of Anglican apologetics. Law argued that the Church is a real society with a divine commission to administer the sacraments, and that the sacraments are necessary for salvation. In this book, the author defends the doctrine of the Apostolic succession and the authority of the Church of England. He points out that there is no reason to doubt the historical evidence for the continuity of the episcopate, and that the doctrine of the Apostolic succession is no more Popish than the doctrine of the Trinity. Law believed that the importance of the Apostolic succession and the authority of the Church of England needed to be defended against those who would reduce Christianity to a mere matter of sincerity and good intentions.
