Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the story of Hannah and Samuel from their birth to the early life of Samuel. Beginning with Hannah's sorrow that she is barren and her eventual joy at Samuel's birth, the story introduces the reader to the tabernacle at Shiloh and the corrupt priesthood. When Samuel is dedicated to God, he is placed under the tutelage of the priest Eli. The author explores the theme of obedience to God's commands and the consequences of disobedience. As a child, Samuel hears God's voice and tells Eli, who recognizes that God is speaking to Samuel and tells Samuel to listen and respond to God. Then the Israelites go to war against the Philistines but are defeated and Eli's two sons are killed. As an expression of their faithlessness, the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant into battle, thinking that this will ensure their victory over the Philistines. However, the Philistines capture the Ark of the Covenant, and Eli, upon hearing the news, falls down dead. The book prompts reflection on the nature of faith and the importance of trusting in God's will.
