The author, who subscribes to the doctrines of the New Church, explores the constitution of man and how, despite being born into a state of ignorance, they are endowed with the faculties to love and understand, which over time can be developed into rationality and liberty. The book's central theme is that education should seek to prepare children for their future life by instilling in them the idea of the Lord as the Divine Man and teaching them to love their neighbor in accordance with the two commandments. According to the author, the ultimate goal of education is to lead man to a state of spiritual bliss through a process of reformation and regeneration.
