Explore the earliest form of Christian worship through authentic liturgical pieces from the ante-Nicene era. This collection highlights prayers, hymns, creeds, and relics of the early Church, revealing how devotion was shaped before the Nicene era.
Compiled to illuminate the devotional life of the first Christians, the book gathers devotional formulae, prayers, and hymns that can be assigned with certainty to the period before the Council of Nicaea. It includes a prayer from the Epistle of Clement, extracts from the Didache, prayers from the Scillitan Martyrs, and prayers attributed to Origen, along with forms of creed and a variety of liturgical expressions. Readers will also encounter hymns, a Virgins’ Song, an Evening Hymn, and prayers and thanksgivings drawn from the Canons of Hippolytus and other early sources.
Ideal for readers of early Christian worship, liturgical history, and the formation of church ritual in the centuries before the Nicene Council.

Excerpt from The Liturgy and Ritual of the Ante-Nicene Church
It has been attempted to put together in this volume all that is known about the Liturgy and Ritual of the Ante-Nicene Church, so far as such knowledge can be gathered (1) from Holy Scripture; (2) from ecclesiastical writings prior to A.D 325; (3) from scanty surviving liturgical remains; and (4) from a few other sources, e.g. inscriptions, etc.
A chapter has been added dealing with the interesting but difficult question as to how far the worship and ritual of the Christian Church are of Jewish origin, or are modified by Jewish or other non-Christian influence.
It is hoped that from the material accumulated in the following pages, an answer may be found to the important question, 'How far does the Book of Common Prayer o the Church of England retain or reflect primitive usage, both absolutely as regards itself, and relatively, in comparison with the service-books of other parts of Christendom?'
