Excerpt from Chapter 1: Colonel Wharton Kendrick leaned back in his chair, stroked his red side-whiskers reflectively, and looked across the table with an expression of embarrassment on his round ruddy face. For the moment his command of words had evidently failed him. As embarrassment and failure of language were equally foreign to his nature, I was confirmed in a growing suspicion that there had been an ulterior purpose behind his cordial invitation to luncheon. The meal had been a good one, and he was paying for it, and so I felt that I owed him my moral support. Therefore, I returned such a look of encouragement as might properly express the feelings of a fledgling attorney toward a millionaire who was the probable source of active litigation, and waited for him to speak. "See here, Hampden," he said at last; "you know something about my row with Peter Bolton, don't you?"

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book begins with an introduction from Colonel Wharton Kendrick, who outlines his feud with Peter Bolton and invites the author to do some undercover detective work on Bolton's activities. The author agrees and reports back to Kendrick several times on his progress. The author discovers that Bolton is working with the Council of Nine, a local organization of anarchists, socialists, and communists, and that he has given them a large sum of money. The author also learns that Bolton has hired a group of thugs to spy on him. The author's investigation takes him deep into the criminal underworld of San Francisco. He learns about the city's gangs, its corrupt politicians, and its ruthless businessmen. He also learns about the plight of the working class, who are struggling to survive in a city that is increasingly divided between the rich and the poor. Through his experiences, the author comes to a new understanding of the social and economic forces that are shaping San Francisco. He learns that the city is a microcosm of the country as a whole, and that the problems that it faces are the same problems that are faced by all of America. The author's insights into the nature of class conflict and the role of violence in society are as relevant today as they were when this book was first written. This book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of American history and the development of the American labor movement.
