Synopsis

This book offers a meticulous account of the rich ecclesiastical history of the Diocese of Carlisle in Northern England, from its apostolic origins to the Reformation. The author traces the development of Christianity in the region, from the arrival of the first Celtic missionaries to the establishment of the bishopric in 1133. The book explores the complex interplay between the Celtic, Roman, and English influences in shaping the religious landscape of the area and sheds light on the remarkable survival of Celtic traditions in the face of Roman and Norman conquest. Along the way, the author delves into fascinating topics such as the role of women in the early church, the influence of monasticism, and the impact of the Reformation on the region's religious life. The book concludes by emphasizing how an exploration of the history of the Carlisle Diocese offers profound insights into the complex and often tumultuous religious history of England.

Présentation de l'éditeur

So many chartularies and manuscripts relating to the history of the Diocese of Carlisle are still unprinted and unindexed, that the work of its historian must be largely attentative, and he must expect in course of time to be set right on many points. I have to express my thanks to my friends, the Rev. T. Lees, F.S.A., the Rev. W. S. Calverley, F.S.A., the Rev. H. Whitehead, and the Rev. J. Wilson, for much valuable assistance. I have availed myself to the fullest of Archdeacon Prescptt svaluable contributions to local history, and I wish there were more of them. I have pillaged without mercy the Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. I have borrowed much from the works of Stubbs, Freeman, Green, and Froude. The wood-blocks are lent by the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. A ugust, 1889.
