Synopsis
This book examines the relationship between various memory tests and pedagogical practices from the late 19th century, when standardized testing was just beginning. To do so, the author surveyed research on memory and learning conducted by educators and psychologists. The author found that early research in this area led to the development of the idea that teaching should be tailored to the mind of the child rather than the child being forced to fit the methods of the teacher. However, this idea was based on research that was scientifically inadequate by present standards, and the author suggests that later research failed to support the original assertions. In conclusion, this book provides valuable historical context on the development of educational psychology as a field and the evolution of the relationship between memory and learning research and pedagogical practices.
