Where translations were available I have used them; as, the old English translation of the Erichiridion, reprinted by Methuen, Eond., 1905; the Rev. E. Johnson sedition of N. Bailey s Colloquies, 2vols., Lond., 1875; the selections from the same by Professor Whitcomb for the historical series of the University of Pennsylvania, Phil., 1902 ;the Rev. James Copner stranslation of the Praise of Folly, Lond., 1878; and the invaluable collection of Erasmus sletters to 1517 (T he Epistles of Erasmus), arranged chronologically with scholarly introductions and comments by Francis Morgan Nichols, 2vols., Longmans, 1901, 04. (A new complete edition of the Epistles in Latin has been begun by P. S. A llen, an enthusiastic Erasmus scholar, with an elaborate commentary, Vol. I, Oxford Univ. Press, 1906.) Of books on Erasmus I have had before me the following: The Lives by A miel, Paris, 1889; Butler, Lond., 1825; Capey, Lond. and N. Y.
