This book by the author of A Rose of Normandy follows the exciting journey of two young brothers who leave their homeland of France to join their fur-trader uncle in the New France colony of Quebec in 1689. Along the way they encounter a friendly trader who helps them with a warm meal and lodging before they travel on. Arriving at their uncle's home, they are greeted warmly, despite some initial coldness from their uncle. The boys soon go on their first adventure together with their uncle's employee, a skilled woodsman and trapper. A series of mishaps lead them through the forest and into the wilderness where they unexpectedly face a series of challenges, some life-threatening, but always with each other's support. Throughout the story, the boys learn a lot about the fur trade, the history and the terrain of the region, and what it means to follow in their father's footsteps amidst the dangers and rewards of life in the wilderness.
