This book of poetry goes beyond the conventional constraints of structure and form. Instead, the author has chosen to offer unpretentious, heartfelt verse for the enjoyment of an enlightened audience. The book has six main themes: memories of home and one's native vale; reflections on the dying year and the fading bluebell; the fleeting nature of time and life; the promise and disappointments of hope; the beauty of nature in all seasons; and the pain of loss and grief. The author began writing as a young man, and these poems are a distillation of a lifetime's experiences distilled into verse. Whether writing of his childhood home, the changing seasons, or the wider world around him, the author's love of his subject matter shines through on every page. This book of poetry is a celebration of life's journey and a testament to the power of verse to capture both joy and sorrow in equal measure.

In submitti Dgthe following unpretending pages to the notice of an enlightened public, the Author requests his readers to bear in mind that they are the productions of a man who has had very little learning. Entirely cut off from every opportunity of acquiring any knowledge of the higher branches of literature, and but scantily blessed with the means of improving hiinself in the first principles of letters, he feels sensible that the following attempts in verse, will be found defective in many points, and wanting that finished elegance which marks the productions of those who have had the advantage of a superior education. The Author was under the necessity of going to work at the early age of nine years, and at that period he had never tried to write his own name: indeed, he had no knowledge whatever of letters, but what he had acquired at a Sabbath school, and through the medium of a village school dame, who advanced him so far in learning, that he was enabled to read, though only very indifferently, his Testament, Often has he employed his leisure hours, in the church yard in his native valley.

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work.
