Synopsis

Uncover the quiet forces behind a world on the edge of war.

This edition presents a closer look at how diplomatic reports and neutral observations shed light on early 20th‑century tensions and the march toward conflict. In these pages, readers are invited to follow a careful argument about how nations spoke and acted before World War I. The text examines Belgian diplomatic sources, English diplomacy, and the way “neutral” observers viewed the rising rivalries that shaped a continent. It asks readers to consider why nations prepared for war and how alliances, naval power, and economic competition influenced decisions on the eve of disaster.

  • How Belgian officials viewed England’s diplomacy and the balance of power feeding European tension.
  • What neutral observers believed about Germany, Britain, and the push toward war.
  • How propaganda, alliances, and military planning interacted with public opinion.
  • Consistent themes about preparedness, distrust, and the dynamics of alliance politics.
Ideal for readers of historical analysis and readers interested in diplomacy, war, and the shaping of public perception in a pivotal era.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Excerpt from The Myth of a Guilty Nation

This book is made up of a series of articles originally published in the Freeman. It, was compiled to establish one point and only one, namely: that the German Government was not solely guilty of bringing on the war. I have not been at all concerned with measuring the German Government's share of guilt, with trying to show that it was either great or small, or that it was either less or more than that of any other Government or association of Governments. All this is beside the point. I do not by any means wish to escape the responsibility of saying that I think the German Government's share of guilt in the matter is extremely small; so small by comparison with that of the major Powers allied against Germany, as to be inconsiderable. That is my belief, demonstrable as I think by such evidence as has now become available to any candid person. But this has nothing whatever to do with the subject-matter of this volume.
