Studies on the Gospels are here offered to the reader. I have never been able to consent with that which so often is asserted namely, that the Gospels are in the main plain and easy, and that all the chief difficulties of the New Testament are to be found in the Epistles. There are, indeed, by the gracious provision of God, abundance of plain things so plain that no way farer, who seeks his waymarks, need err for lack of such, alike in these and in those. But when we begin to set the hard things of one portion of Scripture against the hard things of another, I cannot admit that they have right to assume it as lifted above all doubt that those of the Epistles infinitely surpass those of the Gospels. How often the difficulties of the Epistles are merely difficulties of form ;not of the thought, but of the setting forth of the thought; of the logical sequence, which only requires a patient disentangling, and all is comparatively clear.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the profound complexities of the Gospels, challenging the common perception that they are simple and straightforward. The author argues that while the Epistles may present difficulties in terms of form and logical sequence, the Gospels pose a different kind of challenge ââ â one that stems from the very essence of the divine thought expressed within them. The author contends that the life and teachings of Jesus are filled with mysteries that surpass human comprehension, echoing a theme found in the writings of many prominent Church Fathers. He highlights the significance of the Temptation of Christ in the wilderness, emphasizing its importance as a pivotal event in the history of redemption and its connection to Christââ â¢s Baptism. The author explores the symbolism of the wilderness as a setting for this encounter, comparing it to the Garden of Eden and arguing that Christââ â¢s victory over Satan in this desolate landscape signifies the restoration of the earth to its original fertility and beauty. This exploration further touches upon the author's understanding of the devilââ â¢s role in human history and the complexities of temptation as a universal human experience. Through a rich analysis of the biblical text, the author unravels the theological and spiritual significance of the Temptation, illuminating the depth and complexity of the Gospels for the modern reader.
