Although this book contains a sketch of Mr. Stanton searly life, his professional career, and his general characteristics, its main purpose is to present the record of his relation to the civil war, and to mark the place in history to which his services to the country entitle him. His public life embraced the secession winter of 1860-61, three years of the civil war, 1862-65, and three years of the reconstruction struggle which followed it. He died in 1869, while yet the passions of those times were at the highest. The story, therefore, of his public career is as stormy as the period in which he wrought; and his claims upon the respect and gratitude of his countrymen rest chiefly upon the part he took in the preservation of the Union. It is thirty years since this great American ended his work; and the country, then torn by faction, and divided into two warring sections, is now thoroughly reunited.
