Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the administration of Louis F. Post, Assistant Secretary of Labor, in 1920. Post's authority to oversee the deportation of aliens was examined in relation to allegations that he had countermanded the deportation proceedings of hundreds of aliens who were either arrested in raids or identified in individual cases. Following World War I, legislation had been passed to deport any alien deemed to be a threat to the government, including both anarchists and members of the Communist Party. The author of this book charges that Post disregarded this law, and specifically disregarded a ruling from the Secretary of Labor that members of the Communist Party were to be deported. The author presents evidence that Post arbitrarily overruled the decisions of lower officials within the Department of Labor and personally ordered the release of many of those who had been arrested. The book's findings suggest that Post's actions were part of a deliberate effort to undermine the deportation proceedings that were underway.
