Prior to this time, there was no reliable compilation of financial data on California banks. The authors provide a record of bank assets and liabilities at the end of each reporting period, and then conclude with a discussion of five savings banks and five commercial banks that failed during their period of examination. The authors were charged with visiting and examining each California bank, which had not been systematically done before, and raised concerns that led to reforms. The book offers a valuable perspective on banking in the Western US in the late 19th century.
