Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a biography of Leo Tolstoy, exploring his life and work and considering his faith and literary achievements. Tolstoy was born in 1828 into a noble Russian family, but after his parents died, his foster parents forced him to study law at the University of Kazan. He left before finishing his degree to live a life of debauchery, womanizing, and gambling. He later served in the Crimean War, which inspired him to change his libertine lifestyle. After the war, he devoted himself to writing and social activism and organizing charitable projects such as soup kitchens. He died in 1910 after suffering from pneumonia. Tolstoy's main legacy is his literary work including his novels, short stories, plays, and essays. He is best known for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both of which were published in the 1860s. The two novels are considered to be some of the greatest works of Russian literature and are widely studied and translated. His essays, including A Confession and What I Believe, explore his religious and philosophical beliefs. Tolstoy's body of work is considered a testament to his "search for the meaning of life."
