And, lest anything so fatal should take place as the substitution Of an aesthetic for an ethical religion, or art be depraved by being idolised, it is well that we should know what art cannot do through those who duly own what it can. The glacial age is now over when religion was in peril from natural science in our more genial day the danger is from other and sunnier sides; and one of these is the aesthetic. Truly the danger Of Capua to Hannibal is great. But it may be useful, while some show how bad a master Art may be, that others should indicate how good she can be as a servant. If a bad judge she is a precious witness. That is what I try to suggest to any aspiring and ingenuous spirits who may happen to take this book into their hands. Considerations of the kind be.
