Excerpt from Christ on Parnassus
Much attention is now happily given to the phil Osophy both of history and religion, and it may be worth while to urge that no account of society is just which ignores the action, in it and for it, Of the spiritual power which comes next to religion, and has so many exchanges with it. In an age Of culture the artist in various kinds means much. And, lest anything so fatal should take place as the substitution Of an aesthetic for an ethical religion, or art be depraved by being idolised, it is well that we should know what art cannot do through those who duly own what it can. The glacial age is now over when religion was in peril from natural science in our more genial day the danger is from other and sunnier sides; and one of these is the aesthetic. Truly the danger Of Capua to Hannibal is great. But it may be useful, while some show how bad a master Art may be, that others should indicate how good she can be as a servant. If a bad judge she is a precious witness. That is what I try to suggest to any aspiring and ingenuous spirits who may happen to take this book into their hands. Considerations of the kind be.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a stimulating survey of the connections between Art and Religion, examining in particular the profound mutual influence between the two throughout history. The author argues that Religion has often provided both the creative impetus and the dominant inspiration for Artistic expression, while Art has, in turn, exerted its own influence upon the character and development of religious practices. The book tackles the unique relationship between Art and Religion in ancient Greece, where the author shows how the prevailing naturalist philosophy found its manifestation in the development of their artistic traditions, with a special focus on the influence this had on Greek sculpture and poetry. The author concludes by venturing into the distinction between Art and Religion in Christianity, where Art still draws upon Religious motifs while also becoming infused with its own distinct themes such as individuality, human suffering, and moral ambiguity. The book concludes by arguing that while Art will never fully replace the spiritual power of Religion, it nevertheless enriches the human experience and plays a vital role in making visible certain dimensions of the spiritual realm. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
