Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, set in 18th century France, tells the tale of Croisilles, a young man who, upon returning from a business trip to find his father has gone bankrupt and fled to America, is tricked by a goldsmith named Jean into thinking that he has no choice but to drown himself in order to avoid social ruin. Distraught, Croisilles seeks out the beautiful Julie, daughter of the wealthy farmer-general, M. Godeau, to bid her farewell and ask, as a last favor, her hand in marriage. He is surprised when Julie's answering bouquet seems to contain a glimmer of hope. Inspired by that hope, Croisilles is talked out of his suicidal thoughts by Jean, who shares his own modest savings with him. Croisilles, supported by this newfound hope, writes an impassioned letter to Julie, asking what riches one would need to be considered worthy of her hand. Julie, having missed out on the gossip about Croisilles' father, responds that 100,000 crowns would suffice. Croisilles, who has not even one hundredth of that amount, attempts to gamble his 200 louis winnings in order to multiply it, but loses it all and is forced to sell his family home to a Jewish broker. With no money left, he decides to invest what little is left of his father's gold in a ship bound for the Baltics, hoping to multiply his investment through trade. He leaves a message with Julie about his plans, not knowing she had read of the ship's demise in that day's shipping news. Now homeless and penniless, Croisilles remains unaware of this tragedy and lives on the streets, subsisting off of what little remains of his watch, hoping that Julie will remain faithful until his investment pays off. Throughout this ordeal, Julie watches Croisilles' actions, unaware of his desperate poverty and is aware of the ship's demise. She takes this into account when Croisilles confesses his poverty to her father, and is filled with sorrow and disappointment, realizing that Croisilles has ruined himself for her. The book delves into the themes of desperation, love, and the follies one might commit in its name. It explores the lengths to which someone might go in order to win the affection of another, and the importance of communication and honesty in relationships.
