Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book contains two series of lectures delivered by the author to the Boyle Lectures in the years 1864 and 1865 and examines the history of the early Christian Church, exploring the arguments and ideas used by some of its first apologists as they worked to convince Pagans that the Christian revelation was true. It considers how early Christian thinkers such as Justin Martyr used the authority of ancient philosophy and the arguments of Plato to show that the truths of Christian revelation were directly descended from eternal truths. The author then traces the development of these ideas by later Christian apologists of the second century, such as Tertullian and Origen, who argued that the universal human experience of conscience and reason was evidence of Christian truths. Ultimately, this book provides a valuable insight into the early development of Christianity and the arguments used to convince and incorporate adherents to the new faith.
