Explore how German-speaking communities shaped early America.
From presses to Moravians, this volume reveals a broader national story.
This book traces the role of German-speaking groups in the colonial era, showing how presses, printed works, and faith communities helped form American life. It looks at printers, pamphlets, and notable projects in Germantown, Ephrata, and Philadelphia, and it follows the Moravians, Schwenkfelders, and other German-speaking settlers as they built communities and influenced culture.
Ideal for readers of American history, religious history, and German-American heritage.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
This reproduction was printed from a digital file created at the Library of Congress as part of an extensive scanning effort started with a generous donation from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Library is pleased to offer much of its public domain holdings free of charge online and at a modest price in this printed format. Seeing these older volumes from our collections rediscovered by new generations of readers renews our own passion for books and scholarship.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the little-known history of the significant German emigration to the American colonies in the century preceding the American Revolution. By the time of the conflict, one hundred and fty thousand Germans had arrived in America, a number equal to half the population of Pennsylvania. The book explores the reasons behind their mass departure from Germany, including religious persecution and social and political strife, and describes their experiences in their new homeland. It illuminates their role in the founding of Germantown in 1683, the first German settlement in America, and traces the establishment of many other German communities throughout the colonies. Moreover, the book sheds light on the contributions of these immigrants to American life, including the founding of religious communities, the establishment of schools and universities, and the development of industry and commerce. By examining the vibrant culture and experiences of German immigrants, this book offers a rich and nuanced understanding of their impact on American society and history.
