The whole history of mankind (since the dissolution of primitive tribal society, holding land in common ownership) has been a history of class struggles, contests between exploiters and exploited, ruling and oppressed classes. The history of these class struggles forms a series of evolution in which, nowadays, a stage has been reached where the exploited and oppressed class the proletariat cannot attain its emancipation from the sway of the exploiting and ruling class the bourgeoisie without, at the same time, and once and for all, emancipating society at large from all exploitation, oppression, class distinctions and class struggles. Communist Manifesto. The struggle of the working class against capitalist exploitation must of necessity be a political struggle. The working class cannot fight its economic battles nor develop its economic organization unless it possesses political rights. It cannot bring about the transference of the instruments of production into the hands of society unless it has obtained political power. Erfurter Program.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book concisely traces the development and character of class consciousness, particularly in America, from primitive societies to the modern day, arguing that the ideological divide between workers and capitalists is more important than their relative economic status. By drawing on the historical evolution of feudalism and capitalism, the author contends that the drive for profit has consistently led to the oppression of the working class by the capitalist class. By examining notable examples of labor unrest and struggle from across the world and throughout history, the author explains how these dynamics have shaped the historical development of class consciousness. In so doing, the book makes plain the political nature of the conflict between labor and capital and argues that only through collective political action can the working class free itself from exploitation.
