Synopsis

Preserving our literary heritage is a civic call to action.

This collection argues that protecting editions, provenance, and the craft of book collecting is essential for future readers and scholars. It blends thoughtful essays with historical reflections on how private devotion can sustain public knowledge. The book invites readers to consider the responsibilities of the collector, the role of libraries and museums, and the value of high-quality bindings and early editions. It offers perspective on why careful stewardship matters, and how individual actions shape the story of literature for generations to come.

  • Understand why preserving old books and their bindings matters to culture.
  • Explore the balance between private collecting and public access.
  • Gain insight into provenance, cataloging, and the history of bibliographic practice.
  • Reflect on the duties collectors have toward posterity and national heritage.
Ideal for readers interested in bibliography, librarianship, and the enduring value of primary literary artifacts.

Présentation de l'éditeur

In the sphere of religion, a voice pleading from the pulpit for that universal toleration which allows to each individual his share in the constitution and perpetuity of truth and honour irrespective of creed or dogma, is, even at this time of day, no uncommon or unnecessary occurrence. I have heard an aged and gifted clergyman express the hope that the time was not far distant when preachers of all denominations would freely interchange pulpits. But we know that they have not adopted the spirit of toleration to this extent; and just so long as they attempt to save themselves and their followers, each in his own selfish craft, and to stem the tide of every evil unaided by the qualities which others might supply, but which they themselves lack, they need not be disappointed to find that men of wide sympathies are debarred from fraternising with them.
