Preserve, value, and responsibility in book collecting. This collection argues that literary treasures should stay in the country and be cared for by both private collectors and public institutions. It explores the duties collectors feel toward posterity and the impact of auctions, rarity, and taste on our national memory.
The essays survey how collectors, libraries, and educators shape access to classic English literature. They discuss the role of binding, provenance, and early editions, and they critique trends that threaten the integrity of old books. The author advocates thoughtful, informed collecting as a civic responsibility and a source of cultural wealth.

In the sphere of religion, a voice pleading from the pulpit for that universal toleration which allows to each individual his share in the constitution and perpetuity of truth and honour irrespective of creed or dogma, is, even at this time of day, no uncommon or unnecessary occurrence. I have heard an aged and gifted clergyman express the hope that the time was not far distant when preachers of all denominations would freely interchange pulpits. But we know that they have not adopted the spirit of toleration to this extent; and just so long as they attempt to save themselves and their followers, each in his own selfish craft, and to stem the tide of every evil unaided by the qualities which others might supply, but which they themselves lack, they need not be disappointed to find that men of wide sympathies are debarred from fraternising with them.
