Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the history of Oxford University and its colleges. The author uses archival research to provide a glimpse into Oxford's medieval origins, the lives of its students, its tiffs with the townspeople, and the founding of its colleges. The author argues that the colleges were an outgrowth of the university, not the other way around. They started as hostels or halls for students lodging with citizens, and gradually evolved into self-governing communities with their own statutes and endowments. The book provides detailed accounts of the founding of many of Oxford's colleges, including Merton, University, Balliol, Exeter, Oriel, Queens, New College, Lincoln, All Souls, Magdalen, Brasenose, Corpus Christi, and Christ Church. Each college had its own unique character and mission, reflecting the interests and values of its founders. For example, New College was founded by William of Wykeham, a reformer who sought to strengthen the orthodox priesthood and provide a constant supply of model scholars for his college through his school at Winchester. The book concludes by discussing the impact of the Reformation on Oxford and the university's role in English society over the centuries.
