St chapter of his Poetic Aristotle defines metaphor as the transference of a word to a sense different from its proper signification .F our kinds of metaphors are distinguished by him, namely, those in which the transference is made (i) from the genus to the species (2) from the species to the genus (3) from species to species and (4) according to the analogous (K ara to ava Xoyov). So far as the first three kinds are concerned the classification is suflficiently simple. The nature of the last is not so clear. In the Rhetoric (B ook III, ch. x) also Aristotle describes the fourth kind of metaphor as those according to analogy (K ar avo Xoylav) ,and in the Poetic (ch. xxi) he further explains his meaning: I call it the analogous.
