The author claims that people in the Old Testament held erroneous and primitive beliefs about God, which gradually gave way to truer and more adequate conceptions. This change is attributed not to an essential change in God, but to a growing human realization of His nature. Erroneous beliefs about the nature of God probably originated as inheritances from ancestors, and were often advanced on earlier beliefs and customs. Such primitive ideas could even have been the result of God's revelation, meant for those feeling their way toward Him. The book concludes by stating that Jesus Christ is the culmination of gradual revelation and perception of God, as He saw in a perfect way what was only dimly perceived in the Old Testament.
