Synopsis
This book suggests that it is an error to prioritize the education of the masses over the education of a learned elite. Indeed, the author argues that one cannot exist without the other. With the rise of social programs focusing on the lower and middle classes, the study of literature, philosophy, and the sciences has diminished greatly within universities, threatening not only the universities themselves but the fabric of our democratic society. The author traces the historical interdependence of social and higher education, beginning in the 16th century when both the Scottish universities and the parochial school system were founded, through to the present day, which finds the importance of higher education neglected. By exploring the political, social, and religious importance of these institutions, the author argues that not only is there a need for universities to exist, but that the study of non-vocational subjects is a pillar of a progressive and democratic society.
