The essays contained in this volume are chosen from among many on account of the permanent and vital importance of the themes discussed in them. Some of them have never before been published, but a part of them have appeared from time to time in periodicals or in pamphlet form. The first, which furnishes the leading title of this book, was prepared, at the request of the editor, for The North American Review. At the time not a few scientists were stoutly contending, since the laws of nature are immutable, that the belief that God answers prayer for rain or the recovery of the sick is not only untenable but even preposterous. And some such scientists still linger among us. The second paper, written only a few months ago, is an effort to free the doctrine of the atonement of all arbitrary elements and to interpret on natural and scientific grounds what the Scriptures say of the sufferings of Christ. The Supreme End of Theological Schools is an address delivered before The Rohinson Rhetorical Society at the semi-centennial of The Rochester Theological Seminary. The interpretation of John 21:15-17 was presented at the Eighth Conference, held at All Saints Memorial Church, Providence, R. I.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. Drawing upon biblical texts, this book presents a thorough exploration of prayer's powerful connection to science and the scientific method. The author begins by establishing a clear understanding of both prayer and the scientific process, emphasizing that they are not inherently at odds. Through thoughtful discourse, the author delves into the concept of the immutability of natural laws, showing how even within this framework, the author believes that God can still answer prayers. The author argues that denying the possibility of God answering prayers due to the immutability of natural laws would also necessitate denying the possibility of divine intervention in spiritual matters. The author then examines the wealth of testimony from throughout history, in which people claim to have experienced answered prayers. The author contends that to dismiss such testimony simply as coincidence requires a credulity that exceeds that of believing in answered prayer. Ultimately, the author asserts that prayer, far from being incompatible with science, is supported by it.
