Pecisti nos ad Te, et inquietum est cor nostrum, donee requiescat in Te. A ug. Confess. 1. ., c. 1. I. HIS YOUTH. AURELIUS AUGUSTINUS, the most original, spirited, profound and influential of the Church Fathers, was born on the 13th of November, 353, at Tagestum, in Numidia. His father was a member of the City Council, and an irritable, sensual man, but at the same time kindly disposed. Although he remained a heathen, until shortly before his death, he did not, as it appears, lay any obstruction in the Christian course of his wife.

This little book is not oi Fered to the public as a complete monograph. It is designed for the general reader rather than the scholar to give a condensed picture of the life and abors of that eminent saint, who alone, of all the ancient Fathers, stood high in favor with the Reformers of the Sixteenth Century, and exerted a mighty influence over them, as well as over the preceding generations. May God bless it for good !T. C. Porter. Lancaster, Pa., Dec. 31, 1853.
