It begins with George Jacob Holyoake standing as a working-class candidate in 1857, continuing through the establishment of the London Working-Men's Association in 1866 which attempted to coordinate local groups, and ending with the 1868 General Election and the election of the first Labour MPs. The author argues that Labour's strength came not through Liberal support, but in challenging and eventually breaking their monopoly, proving that the working-class could represent its own interests best, and showing that Labour representation was more than just theory; it was essential for a Parliament representing all the people, and the only way for the concerns of the working-class to be effectively voiced in Parliament.
