A vivid tale set in a remote mountain town, where old loyalties and social orders are quietly tested. In For the Major, a family homecoming stirs the laughter and careful judgments of Far Edgerley and its neighbors, revealing how reputation, love, and duty intersect in a tight-knit community.
As Miss Carroll returns to Chillawassee with the weight of expectation on her, the town watches every move—from grand receptions to intimate encounters—and a tapestry of relationships unfolds. A cast of local figures, including a wary rector, a resourceful housemaid, and a mysterious musician, shape a story filled with mood, manners, and moral stakes. Woolson channels atmosphere and character in equal measure, pulling readers into a world where appearances can both elevate and confine.
Ideal for readers who enjoy character-driven fiction with atmospheric detail and period-era social insight.

Edgerley the first lay on the eastern flank of Chillawassee Mountain; Edgerley the second six hundred feet above. The first Edgerley, being nearer the high civilization of the state capital, claimed the name, and held it; while the second Edgerley was obliged to content itself with an added far. Far Edgerley did not object to its adjective so long as it was not considered as applying especially to the distance between it and the lower town. It was far, if you pleased far from cities, far from traffic, from Babylon, from Zanzibar, from the Pole but it was not far from Edgerley. Kather was Edgerley far from it, and long may she keep so! Meanwhile Edgerley the first prospered, though rather plebeianly.
