The following narrative was written at the repeated request of friends. The events detailed occurred more than twenty years ago, and, as I kept no notes at the time, I have been obliged to write from memory. As some of the persons referred to are still living, I have thought it best to use fictitious initials. I was born in I ewisburg, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1812. My father, John G. Conser for many years a magistrate and an honored man in the community was the only son of Henry Conser, one of the founders of Lewisburg. Henry Conser, my grandfather, was of Greek descent. But he and my father both died long before I could remember, and all I could learn of our Greek ancestor was that he lived somewhere along the Grecian archipelago, that he was captured by the English in a fight on the Mediterranean sea, and was taken to England, whence he migrated to this country early in the eighteenth century. I was educated at Dickinson College, Carlisle, where I graduated in 1839. In 1840 I entered the Baltimore Conference, filling, during my itinerancy, appointments in Baltimore ;also, a number of appointments in Pennsylvania and in Virginia. The first two years of the Rebellion I served as chaplain of the Fifth Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Afterwards I filled appointments at Duncannon and Gettysburg, then went to Virginia, where occurred the events recorded i.tktis5 following pages. At the close of my term mNV xicCY-a.
